Title of Project: Aboriginal Mapping Network User Map: Connecting Local Indigenous Knowledge to Crown Land Referral Decisions using CGDI

First Nation communities across BC and Canada use detailed geospatial information to express their culture and relationship to the land. Outside organizations routinely request information concerning impacts of third-party intent on their traditional territories. We are developing a geospatial application within the Aboriginal Mapping Network (AMN) website (www.nativemaps.org) to strengthen First Nation community response to Crown Land Referrals and support First Nation decision making with regard to land and resource planning. This application will allow a variety of decision makers to access and use current databases of local geographic knowledge, as well as allow elders and archaeologists to add new cultural information. We believe this application can ultimately help gather currently unrecorded cultural knowledge on an ongoing basis.
