Ecotrust Watershed Locator

The watershed locator is a web-based tool, designed for Inforain, that allows a user to investigate the watersheds of the Pacific Salmon territory of North America. Key features include:

  • Search by address (uses Yahoo! geocoder service)
  • Search by watershed name
  • Search by clicking on the map
  • Watershed 'ladder' allowing user to move between watershed levels showing how they are interconnected
  • Insightful watershed level statistics
  • Google terrain map base layer
  • Major rivers and perennial streams layers

While the application is designed for the watersheds within Pacific Salmon territory, it would be relatively easy to re-adapt it for another region or another theme. In fact, our hope is that it will be replicated and improved by others. To that end we have released the client and server code for this application free and open source under the GPL 2 license.

This tool utilizes a number of open source tools, many a part of OSGeo. They include:

  • PHP
  • Mapserver
  • PostGIS
  • OpenLayers
  • TileCache
